Journalism without ethics is just content. This is what MT holds itself to.
Accuracy
We publish what we can verify. We do not publish rumour as fact. When information is still developing, we say so explicitly. When we are uncertain, we say so. When we are wrong, we correct it.
Accuracy is not just about facts. It is about context, proportion and framing. A technically accurate sentence can still mislead. We hold ourselves responsible for the impression a story creates, not just the individual facts within it.
Fairness
We give subjects of criticism a reasonable opportunity to respond before publishing. When a response is not received in time or is declined, we say so in the story.
Fairness does not mean false balance. We do not present fringe positions as equivalent to established fact. We do not give equal weight to misinformation simply to appear even-handed.
Independence
MT does not take positions based on who is watching, who is advertising, or who is in power. Our editorial line is determined by our values and our judgment—not by pressure, relationship or fear.
We oppose undemocratic and unconstitutional acts regardless of who commits them or how they are framed. We call out propaganda regardless of its origin—Pakistani, Indian, Western or otherwise. We do not soften criticism because the subject is a partner, a donor or a government we deal with.
Harm
We consider the potential harm of publishing before we publish. This does not mean we avoid difficult stories—it means we think carefully about how they are told. We do not publish information that puts individuals at risk without a compelling public interest justification. We handle sensitive stories—involving victims, mental health, violence, religion—with care and without sensationalism.
Diversity and Inclusion
MT does not tolerate discrimination on the basis of gender, religion, ethnicity, region, class or sexual orientation in its journalism or in its workplace. Our coverage reflects Pakistan’s full diversity, not just its dominant voices.
Privacy
Public figures accept scrutiny of their public roles. Private individuals do not forfeit their privacy simply by being caught in a news story. We apply this distinction carefully and consistently.
Children
We do not identify minors involved in crime, violence or sensitive situations without compelling justification and editorial oversight.
Payments
MT does not pay sources for information. We do not accept payments, gifts or hospitality from sources, subjects or anyone seeking to influence our coverage.
